A Plus defends Mahama administration, cautions against abolishing Special Prosecutor

Gomoa Central MP Kwame Asare Obeng, widely known as A Plus, has praised the John Dramani Mahama administration while strongly opposing calls to abolish the Office of the Special Prosecutor, arguing that the institution remains critical to Ghana’s fight against corruption.

Speaking on UNFILTERED with KSM monitored by MyNewsGh, A Plus said it was troubling to hear the scale of alleged corruption uncovered in recent years, noting that corruption cuts across political lines.

“It is depressing to hear how much money has been stolen from the system,” he said, citing figures as high as “$280 million” in alleged losses.

He rejected arguments that the Special Prosecutor should be scrapped due to perceived inactivity, insisting that due process must be followed if leadership changes are needed.

“If we don’t like the Special Prosecutor, we remove him with due process. You cannot abolish the whole office because you think you are not seeing action,” he said.

A Plus compared the argument to disbanding the police over unresolved crimes. “There is armed robbery in Ghana. So should we abolish the Ghana Police Service because armed robbery still exists?” he asked.

He stressed that the presence of the Special Prosecutor alone serves as a deterrent.

“Just having that office may stop people from engaging in some corrupt activities,” he said, adding that the solution lies in strengthening the institution, not dismantling it.
