A rerun of Ablekuma North polls will set a precedent for chaos during elections—Mustapha Salam

National Youth Organizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Salam Mustapha, has raised concerns over the decision to rerun elections in some 19 polling stations in Ablekuma North.

He believes that if this is accepted, it may set a precedent that will affect all other elections in the country.

“I can bet you that if this one stands, every election will be chaotic in this country because if we see that we are losing, we will just cause confusion and destroy everything. They are teaching us a new method of running elections in this country. Our official position is that we are left with three polling stations. We will not accept any rerun,” he stated.

The Youth Commander of the NPP believes that what the Electoral Commission has decided to do will inform future attacks on polling stations and collation centers since the EC can order a rerun later.

“Electoral Commission has held on to its position for the past seven months. The official position of the EC when Bossman Asare went to Parliament was that there were three left to be collated. So, how come the commission’s position has changed when it is not even three weeks since the EC went to Parliament?” he questioned.

To him, the commission cannot arrogate certain powers to itself, indicating that it is only the court that can order a rerun of elections in some polling stations.

Salam Mustapha cited the rerun that happened in Akwatia to back his position that only the court has the power to order a rerun of the elections.
