A symbol of compassion and justice – Mahama mourns Pope Francis

President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, has joined millions around the world in mourning the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis, describing him as “a global symbol of compassion, humility, and justice.”
In a solemn message shared on Twitter, Mahama expressed his sorrow over the Pope’s death and offered condolences to the global Catholic community, especially the faithful in Ghana.
“The world woke up to the sad news of Pope Francis’ passing. On behalf of my family and the people of Ghana, I extend heartfelt condolences to the Roman Catholic Church and all Catholic faithful in Ghana during this time of profound grief.”
The former President went on to honour the Pope’s enduring legacy, saying:
“His legacy of compassion, humility, and commitment to social justice will continue to inspire generations. His leadership and advocacy for the poor and marginalised resonate deeply.”
“May his soul rest in perfect peace.”
The Vatican officially confirmed the death of Pope Francis in the early hours of Monday. He was 88. A statement released by Cardinal Kevin Farrell read:
“Dearest brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis.
At 7.35am this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father. His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and His Church.
He taught us to live the values of the Gospel with fidelity, courage and universal love, especially in favour of the poorest and most marginalised.
With immense gratitude for his example as a true disciple of the Lord Jesus, we commend the soul of Pope Francis to the infinite merciful love of the One and Triune God.”
Pope Francis, who was elected in 2013 after the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI, leaves behind a rich legacy as a reformer, a voice for the vulnerable, and a man whose simplicity won the admiration of both the religious and secular world.
