Abossey Okai dealers to enforce GIPC law against foreign traders

The Abossey Okai Spare Parts Dealers Association says it will begin enforcing Ghana’s trade laws against foreigners operating in local markets from Monday, September 8, 2025.

Communications Director of the group, Takyi Addo said the exercise will ensure compliance with Section 27(1) of the GIPC Act, 2013 (Act 865), which bars non-citizens from engaging in petty trading, hawking, or selling goods in stalls and markets.

According to the Association, foreign traders continue to flout the law in areas like Abossey Okai, threatening the survival of Ghanaian businesses.

“Successive governments have failed to enforce this Act, resulting in a persistent drain on the businesses of Ghanaian traders. The time has come to uphold the law and protect local enterprise from unlawful competition,” they said in statement.

The group stressed it is not against foreign investment but insisted that such investments must comply with Ghana’s laws.

It also urged state institutions and stakeholders to back the exercise to safeguard indigenous entrepreneurship.
