About 60 MPs ready to back Bawumia again– Sammi Awuku discloses

Leading New Patriotic Party (NPP) stalwart and former National Organiser, Sammi Awuku, has revealed that a majority of NPP Members of Parliament are prepared to support Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia should he decide to contest the party’s presidential primaries again.
In an interview shedding light on internal deliberations within the party, Awuku confirmed that the NPP is entering a new phase of leadership decisions and that discussions with the former Vice President are ongoing.
“The party is now in the process of another leadership decisions and contest,” he said. “We also needed to have some closed-door discussions with him to find out his thoughts and his plans as well for it.”
According to Awuku, many NPP MPs have expressed a firm willingness to throw their weight behind Dr. Bawumia, who led the party into the 2024 general elections but was unsuccessful in securing the presidency.
“A good number of these Members of Parliament also did indicate that if he is also willing to throw his hat into the ring again, we are definitely also there to support him,” he stated.
He estimated that around 60 MPs have already signaled their support should Dr. Bawumia choose to make a second attempt at leading the party.
“I know there are about 60 Members of Parliament who are willing to also support him if he decides to also contest,” Awuku revealed.
When pressed on whether Bawumia has made a final decision, Awuku disclosed that the former Vice President is still consulting widely but has been uplifted by the encouragement.
“Did he give a definitive response as to whether he is going to contest? He said he is still consulting as well. And definitely, he is excited that he has the support of these Members of Parliament.”
Dr. Bawumia, who made history as the NPP’s first Muslim flagbearer, remains a prominent figure within the party, and speculation about a second presidential bid has been growing steadily following the 2024 election.
