Accra Initiative charts path for new global health architecture

The Accra Initiative for a New Global Health Governance Architecture has been launched following the Africa Health Sovereignty Summit held on August 5, 2025, in Accra under the patronage of President John Dramani Mahama.
The summit, attended by African leaders and global health figures including former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo of Nigeria, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of Liberia, and Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus of the WHO, reaffirmed the urgent need for a reimagined global health order to address funding gaps, inequities, and fragmented leadership that disproportionately affect vulnerable populations.
The Accra Declaration emphasized health as a driver of economic transformation, innovation, and productivity, while endorsing principles such as equitable participation, sustainable financing, stronger continental leadership, and cross-sectoral collaboration.
A key outcome was the formation of a Presidential High-Level Panel to advance the roadmap for a new global health system, ensuring Africa-led standards and inclusive reforms.
“Health is not just about survival; it is about sovereignty, resilience, and development,” the communiqué stated, positioning the initiative as a strategic framework for securing both continental and global health futures.
