Acting CJ takes full control of case assignment and scheduling

The acting Chief Justice, Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, has introduced a sweeping change in the way Ghana’s superior courts handle new case filings.

A directive dated April 23, 2025, now requires all fresh cases and applications to pass through his office for assignment and scheduling.

Communicated through the Deputy Judicial Secretary, the directive applies to Registrars of the Supreme Court, Courts of Appeal, and High Courts.

Under the new system, all newly filed matters must first be presented to the acting Chief Justice, who will then determine the appropriate court and panel of judges to handle each case.

This approach centralises control over both the allocation of cases and the fixing of hearing dates. It replaces previous procedures and guidelines for court assignments and remains in effect until further notice.

Court registrars across the country have been instructed to comply strictly with the directive, which is expected to ensure greater consistency and oversight in the judicial process.
