Adenta Kumi’s wife loses pregnancy following NIB dawn raid

The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, has confirmed that the wife of former Adenta parliamentary candidate, Alfred Ababio Kumi, suffered a miscarriage following a traumatic dawn raid on their home by state security operatives.

The incident, which occurred on Friday, May 23, involved about eight armed men believed to be operatives of the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB). Speaking on Joy FM’s midday news, Mr. Kodua described the development as tragic and deeply upsetting.

“I have spoken with Kumi’s wife, and sadly, it is true. She suffered a miscarriage amidst the trauma. It’s a heartbreaking situation,” he stated.

Earlier, Kumi’s mother, Nana Ama Owusu, recounted the harrowing ordeal on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem. She described how the heavily armed men, most of whom were in plain clothes, stormed the family’s residence around 5:30 a.m. Only one officer wore a police uniform.

“Two of them claimed to be from the CID, but before I could speak to them, one pushed me aside,” she said. “They used the butts of their guns to force open the gate. Kumi’s wife came out in panic and struggled to open it. Then one of them ordered a warning shot.”

According to her, the pregnant woman fled in fear, tripped, and started bleeding. She was four months pregnant.

“The shock and fall were too much. She began bleeding heavily, and later, we learned she had lost the baby,” Nana Ama tearfully recounted. The family rushed her to seek urgent medical care following the incident.

The arrest of Alfred Kumi is suspected to be linked to his recent public comments about the ongoing petition for the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo. However, the police are yet to officially confirm the motive behind the operation.

The NPP has condemned the incident, accusing the government of using state security to intimidate opposition members. Party officials say they will pursue accountability and call for answers regarding the circumstances of the raid.
