Adentan MCE announces major demolition to tackle flooding

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Adentan, Hon. Ella Esinam Christine Nongo, has announced an impending large-scale demolition exercise across the municipality as part of efforts to curb the recurring floods caused by indiscriminate construction on waterways.

This declaration followed a joint assessment tour of flood-affected areas on Monday, 19th May. Hon. Nongo was accompanied by the Member of Parliament for Adentan, Hon. Mohammed Adamu Ramadan, the Municipal Coordinating Director, Ms. Rachel Ofosu Sarpong, the Municipal NADMO Director, Mr. Eric Kofi Padi, and key personnel from the Assembly, including heads of the Works Department, Physical Planning, Information, Budget, Urban Roads, assembly members, and the municipal task force.
The team visited severely impacted communities including Amrahia, Ashieye, Ensuonano, New Legon Rosarosa, Animal Research, and Nanakrom, where the aftermath of torrential rains left many residents displaced and hopeless. Roads were eroded, vehicles submerged, and access to some areas was completely cut off.
At New Legon Rosarosa, a bridge collapsed after floodwaters swept away its gravel foundation, severing access between both ends of the community. Officials also identified a structure dangerously close to the bridge, erected in clear encroachment. In Ensuonano, sections of the road were entirely washed away, rendering vehicular passage impossible.

The flooding has been largely blamed on unauthorized developments on watercourses and wetlands. Officials observed that large volumes of rainwater descend from the Akuapem Mountains, but with natural water pathways obstructed, floodwaters overwhelm low-lying parts of Adentan.
The inspection team was later joined by representatives from the Ministry of Works and Housing, led by sector minister Mr. Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, as well as a delegation from the national NADMO office, led by Deputy Director General in charge of Operations, Hon. Teddy Safori Addi.
Reaffirming her administration’s resolve, Hon. Nongo emphasized the need for bold but necessary actions to avert future tragedies. She disclosed plans for extensive dredging and the construction of improved drainage systems to address the crisis long-term.
She also announced the formation of a special weekend task force to clamp down on illegal construction activities, particularly those carried out at night and over weekends without proper authorization.

Residents who interacted with the officials expressed strong support for the planned demolitions, underscoring the urgent need for safety and proper planning.
Hon. Adamu Ramadan, MP for Adentan, pledged his full backing for the initiative and encouraged the Assembly to pursue all lawful avenues to restore order and safeguard lives and property in the municipality.
The Adentan Municipal Assembly is expected to commence the demolition exercise in the coming weeks as part of a comprehensive flood mitigation strategy. Some structures have already been marked for demolition following the assessment tour.
