Ghana’s elections credible and peaceful – Commonwealth Observer Group

The Commonwealth Observer Group (COG) has affirmed Ghana’s 2024 general elections as peaceful, credible, and transparent, while also recommending improvements in electoral transparency and accountability.
“Ghana’s peaceful and credible elections are a testament to the country’s maturing democracy. The Commonwealth Observer Group has made a detailed assessment of the election, noting areas of significant strength and identifying opportunities for improvement, including the need for enhanced transparency, accountability, and inclusivity in the electoral process,” the Commonwealth Secretary-General, the Rt Hon Patricia Scotland KC, stated.
Led by the former President of Botswana, Dr Mokgweetsi Eric Keabetswe Masisi, the 16-member independent observer team closely monitored the elections, which resulted in John Dramani Mahama being elected as Ghana’s 14th president.
The report commended the professionalism of polling officials, security agencies, and party agents, noting that the calm atmosphere throughout the electoral process reflected Ghana’s deep commitment to democratic principles. It also highlighted Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s early concession as a mark of statesmanship that helped maintain national stability.
Additionally, the Electoral Commission (EC) was praised for implementing measures such as additional polling stations and temporary polling staff, which reduced long queues and streamlined the voting process.
Patricia Scotland urged Ghana’s institutions to take the group’s recommendations seriously, emphasizing the need for continuous efforts to enhance electoral credibility.
She also lauded Ghanaians for their dedication to democratic governance, reinforcing the nation’s reputation as a pillar of stability in Africa.
