Afenyo-Markin blasts Council of State over Chief Justice suspension

The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has sharply criticised the Council of State, accusing it of failing the nation in the wake of the suspension of Ghana’s Chief Justice.

In a pointed social media post, Afenyo-Markin stated plainly, “Our Council of State has failed our democracy,” suggesting that the advisory body has not lived up to its constitutional duty to safeguard the integrity of democratic institutions.

Although he did not elaborate further in the post, the comment comes amid growing political and public scrutiny surrounding the circumstances of the Chief Justice’s suspension—an issue that has sparked widespread debate about judicial independence and executive overreach.

The Minority Leader’s remarks are likely to intensify political tensions, as opposition lawmakers and civil society groups increasingly question the transparency of the process and the role of key constitutional bodies in upholding rule of law.
