Three dead after galamsey pit collapse at Twifo Mampong

Tragedy struck at Twifo Mampong in the Twifo Atti-Morkwa District of the Central Region on Thursday when an illegal mining pit caved in, claiming the lives of three young men.
According to reports, the victims were part of a group of five who had secretly entered the pit at night to carry out galamsey activities. Around 1 a.m., the walls of the mine collapsed, trapping four of them inside.
Rescuers, led by the Twifo Praso District Police Command and supported by the District Chief Executive (DCE), Isaac Yawson, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), and the Ghana National Fire Service, worked for hours before pulling out three bodies.
Efforts are still underway to retrieve the fourth body. Meanwhile, a fifth person, who had been operating a pumping machine outside the pit, narrowly escaped and raised the alarm that triggered the rescue mission.
