Ahantaman Girls SHS Headmistress reveals shocking case of exam malpractice

The Headmistress of Ahantaman Girls Senior High School(SHS), Mrs. Ernestina Kankam, has disclosed a troubling incident of examination malpractice involving a student who gained admission with an impressive Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) aggregate of 14 but was unable to write her own name upon arrival at the school.

Speaking on the factors contributing to the poor performance of students in the 2025 WASSCE, Mrs. Kankam recounted how the issue first came to her attention.

“I was in the office when the Economics teacher brought the student’s examination script,” she explained. “When he walked in with the academic assistant, I assumed it was something we could help the student with. But they told me it was a situation we could not resolve. The student had simply scribbled on the answer sheet; she couldn’t even write her own name.”

Following further inquiries, the student reportedly confessed that a teacher had written the BECE on her behalf, raising serious concerns about the integrity of the examination process.

Mrs Kankam cited the incident as an example of how systemic malpractice at the basic level can severely affect academic performance at the senior high school level, noting that such cases undermine both the confidence and capabilities of students as they progress in their education.
