Ahmed Suale Case: Sanction investigators for misleading prosecutors

Lawyer and a Communication team member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwesi Botchwey Jnr, has called on the Attorney General to sanction investigators in the murder of investigative journalist Ahmed Suale for misleading the prosecutors for six years following the discharge of the accused person in the case.
Mr Botchwey Jnr explained that it is the investigators whose investigations provide the basis for the initiation of prosecution and for six years, they misled the Attorney General’s department in the Ahmed Suale Case and must be penalised to serve as a deterrent to others.
Speaking on Channel 1 TV’s Breakfast Daily, Mr Botchwey Jnr stressed that judicial resources were wasted for six and the investigators must not go scot-free.
“I think it is a waste of judicial resources because prosecutors will have to go to court, file documents, disclosures, go through the process for six years. Today we’re told the investigators didn’t do their job properly. I think that for the first time, the investigators have to be sanctioned,” Mr Botchwey Jnr said.
He added that the state must not rush to seek to prosecute people because people are calling for it but must do due diligence before putting people on trial.
“It should not be that any time the people ask for prosecution, the state must rush to initiate prosecutions,” he noted.
This week, the Madina District Court formally discharged Daniel Owusu Koranteng, the accused person in the murder of investigative journalist Ahmed Suale in 2019.
The Attorney General’s office withdrew the case after a comprehensive review of the evidentiary materials showed that the state had a week case against the accused.
The Attorney General’s department is however still looking into the matter to find and prosecute the perpetrators.
