Switching from Bawumia now would be a costly mistake – Shuga

The Nkwanta North Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kidiyar Albert, popularly called Shuga, is urging the party to maintain its tradition of supporting presidential candidates for a second attempt, rallying behind former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia ahead of the next general elections.
Shuga argued that Dr. Bawumia possesses “the experience, vision, and leadership qualities to unite the party and win power back for the NPP.”
He cautioned that replacing him at this stage would be a political miscalculation. “No presidential candidate has ever won the presidency on their first attempt.
Switching candidates at this point would be a strategic blunder that could keep the NPP in opposition for at least 12 years,” he warned.
Explaining the stakes, he said, “If the NPP changes Dr. Bawumia and we lose the next elections, it will take us 12 long years before returning to power.
This is because the NDC candidate will seek and complete their second term. That is political reality, and we must be wise enough to avoid such a costly mistake.”
He further stressed that loyalty to candidates has been a defining principle of the NPP, recalling how the party stood by Adu Boahen, John Agyekum Kufuor, and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in their political bids.
“We must stand by Dr. Bawumia. If we want to win power back quickly, he is our best shot,” Shuga insisted.
The call came after some youth organizers of the party picked nomination forms for the former flagbearer, signaling a groundswell of grassroots support for his return bid.
