Akufo-Addo backs Mahama’s National Day of prayer declaration

Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has thrown his full support behind President John Dramani Mahama’s decision to declare July 1st a National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving, describing the initiative as timely and unifying.
The day, officially announced by President Mahama earlier this year, is set aside to encourage Ghanaians of all faiths and backgrounds to come together in gratitude and reflection. The first observance is scheduled for July 1, 2025.
During a visit by members of the event’s planning committee to his residence, Akufo-Addo praised the move, calling it a step toward strengthening national unity and promoting peace.
“All of us have to support this initiative,” he said. “It is clearly a worthwhile initiative — that we have this one day where all of us come together to give thanks to the Almighty for the many, many blessings he has bestowed upon us.”
The former president reflected on Ghana’s political journey, noting that while the country has experienced coups, it has largely remained peaceful and avoided the kind of civil conflict that has plagued other parts of the continent.
He said initiatives like the National Day of Prayer serve to deepen the collective spirit of unity and gratitude.
Though Akufo-Addo revealed he will be out of the country on the day due to prior commitments, he assured the committee of his full moral support.
Chairman of the planning committee, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, expressed gratitude for the former president’s endorsement.
“He welcomed us, endorsed the whole programme and thanked the President for the great initiative. He commended us, and we are very grateful,” Ankrah said.
