Akwatia loss is temporary, victory awaits in 2028

Dr. Ekua Amoako, a member of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Communications Team, has expressed confidence that the party will reclaim the Akwatia parliamentary seat in the 2028 general elections despite its recent loss in the by-election.

Speaking on Morning Starr with Naa Dedei Tettey on Friday, Dr. Amoako admitted that while the party had hoped to retain the seat, it was fully aware of the difficult political dynamics at play.

“Going into the Akwatia by-election, of course, it was a seat that we hoped to retain. But the whole context of the by-election was not lost on us.

“We are quite aware that it’s quite a tough one to win by-elections in swing constituencies as an opposition party, especially when the government is that fresh,” she explained.

Despite the defeat, Dr. Amoako maintained that the results reflect the constituency’s competitive nature rather than a permanent shift in voter loyalty.

“From everything and the sentiments on the ground, at least it gives me some confidence that come 2028, especially if we’re able to retain the same candidate, I am confident that it will be a better outcome in 2028,” she stated.

Her remarks come as the NPP reassesses its electoral strategy following the Akwatia loss, with party communicators emphasising that the setback provides lessons ahead of the next general election.
