Anti-galamsey protester accuses former allies of betrayal

One of the protesters of the ongoing anti-galamsey demo in Accra has accused some of their own members of abandoning the cause after exploiting it for personal and political gains.

Speaking to MyNewsGh at the sidelines of the march, protester Kamen Abubakar Sadiq, who introduced himself as a member of Democracy Hub, claimed some individuals joined last year’s demonstrations for selfish reasons.

“We can tell you that the people who joined you last year were doing that because of their own selfish interest, because they didn’t have to do it. No, shut up. You are doing that for your own selfish interest,” Sadiq said, visibly agitated.

He argued that many of those who were once vocal have gone silent after securing their personal interests.

“No matter how you do it. You want political parties. So now they’ve gotten what they want. Where are they? They are hot sellers. They are total sellers. They are disgraced, I’m telling you,” he added.

Recalling last year’s arrests, Sadiq noted, “We that were caught last year, we were 53 in numbers… Let’s even take it that one among us has gone a little bit psycho. What about the 52? Two ladies have just given birth among us. So, where are the 50?”

He expressed frustration that some colleagues have distanced themselves without justification. “The land, we judge them. The spirits of our ancestors, we judge them. For no good reason that you didn’t come and join us.”

Identifying himself as “Executioner” during the interview, Sadiq insisted the struggle is purely for the public good. “For the sake of humanity. All what we are doing, anything you are doing in this life, if not for the sake of humanity… we are here for the sake of humanity.”
