Appointees to lose four months’ salary over asset declaration breaches

Presidential appointees under the Mahama administration who failed to comply with the March 31, 2025 deadline for asset declaration will forfeit four months’ salary, according to a directive announced by Shamima Muslim, the deputy Presidential Spokesperson

In a post shared on her Facebook page on Monday, Ms. Muslim said that appointees who did not submit their statutory asset declarations by the end of the first quarter will forfeit three months of their salaries.

In addition, all appointees—regardless of compliance—will forfeit one extra month’s salary to the newly established Mahama Cares Fund.

“This is part of our commitment to strengthening transparency, accountability, and public trust,” she stated.

The Mahama Cares Fund, launched earlier this year, is a government-backed initiative aimed at supporting social intervention programmes and emergency needs in critical sectors such as health, education, and public welfare.

The fund is being positioned as a symbol of ethical leadership and collective responsibility in governance.

Asset declaration has been a major focus of the Mahama administration’s renewed anti-corruption efforts.

The Office of the Special Prosecutor and the Auditor-General have both been pushing for strict compliance with Article 286 of the 1992 Constitution and the Public Office Holders (Declaration of Assets and Disqualification) Act, 1998 (Act 550), which mandates public officials to declare their assets upon assumption of office, every four years, and at the end of their term.

President John Mahama, who returned to office after winning the December 2024 election, has pledged to run an accountable government with zero tolerance for corruption.

His administration has emphasized ethics reform, citizen engagement, and financial discipline as core pillars of governance.

The forfeiture directive, according to the Presidency, will not only serve as a deterrent but also reinforce the message that ethical standards will not be compromised in public service.
