Armed operatives storm home of Adenta Kumi in controversial arrest

Vincent Ekow Assafuah, Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, has confirmed the arrest of Alfred Ababio Kumi, also known as Adenta Kumi, during what he described as a troubling dawn raid conducted by armed state operatives.

In a Facebook post on Friday morning, Assafuah disclosed that Kumi was picked up from his residence around 4 a.m. by eight heavily armed men believed to be operatives of the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB). According to the MP, six of the men were masked and carried AK-47 rifles, while two others were in plain clothes.

“These Rambo-style actions by government continue to raise concerns that bother on free speech and good governance,” Assafuah wrote, adding the hashtag #FreeAdentaKumiNow to express protest over the arrest.

Family sources also confirmed the arrest to Citi News, stating that Kumi was taken without a warrant or explanation by the heavily armed operatives.

There has been no official statement yet from the National Intelligence Bureau or the Ministry of National Security regarding the reason for the arrest.

The development comes just days after Kumi, a former New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for Adenta, filed a petition to President John Mahama calling for the dissolution of the committee probing the removal of the Chief Justice.

In the petition, Kumi alleged serious misconduct by members of the committee. He claimed that on May 15, following the committee’s first sitting, Justices Gabriel Pwamang, Afia Serwah Asiedu, and Supreme Court Justice Yonni Kulendi were seen dining with Thaddeus Sory—counsel for petitioner Daniel Ofori—at Santoku Restaurant in Accra’s Airport Residential Area.

According to Kumi, the judges and lawyer were overheard discussing issues related to the ongoing inquiry, which he said raises concerns over impartiality and conflicts of interest.

The arrest has sparked public outcry and reignited debate over the government’s handling of dissent and due process.

Human rights advocates and political observers are calling for transparency and the immediate release of Kumi if no formal charges are brought against him.
