Arrogance of power, hardship caused NPP’s defeat

Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the 2024 election, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has blamed the party’s defeat on arrogance of power and the hardship the people of Ghana suffered.

Speaking on the thank you tour on April 27, 2025, the former flagbearer noted that the government wasn’t a listening government and the people of Ghana paid them for not listening to their plight.

The former vice president mentioned the e-levy, DDEP, and other unpopular taxes and programs introduced by the government, which were problematic and contributed to the defeat.

He was worried that for eight years, although there were calls for a reshuffle, a deaf ear was paid to the people’s calls.

“If you look at the studies conducted, there are several reasons attributed to the defeat of the political party. The prices of goods increased; there was total hardship in the country under the NPP government,” he said.

He continued, “Another thing that has been mentioned is the arrogance of power. This means we were not listening to anything anyone said. Party folks called for a reshuffle, but we did not listen to them for eight years. Party folks kicked against the e-levy; party folks told us the DDEP was worrying because most of them were pensioners. Even though the president promised there wouldn’t be haircuts, later there were haircuts”.
