Asaase Radio and Wontumi FM pulled off air in NCA clampdown on non-compliant stations

The National Communications Authority (NCA) has pulled the plug on over 60 radio stations, including high-profile outlets Asaase Radio and Wontumi FM, for flouting regulatory requirements.
According to the NCA, the affected stations were found to be operating with expired authorisations, had failed to pay licence fees, or had not met basic set-up obligations as mandated by the Electronic Communications Act.
This comes on the back of a ministerial directive and a rigorous audit by the authority to restore order across the airwaves.
What raises eyebrows is the inclusion of Asaase Radio (99.5 FM) and Wontumi FM, both of which are not only household names but also closely associated with political figures.
Asaase Radio, known for its high-end journalism and connections to power circles, and Wontumi FM, operated by outspoken NPP regional chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako (a.k.a. Chairman Wontumi), are now silent—at least for now.
Industry observers suggest this move may signal a new era of stricter media regulation, especially where political media outlets had often operated with unchecked leeway.
A Citi News check confirms that Asaase Radio is currently off-air, while sources close to Wontumi FM hint at frantic behind-the-scenes efforts to resolve the situation and resume transmission.
