Ashanti Caucus calls for gov’t intervention following Kumasi fire disaster

The Ashanti Caucus in Parliament has expressed deep concern over the recent fire that destroyed several shops near the Old Central Market in Kumasi, leaving traders and business owners in distress.
In a press statement signed by Hon. Vincent Ekow Assafuah, Esq., the caucus extended its sympathies to affected victims and called for immediate government intervention. The statement highlighted a worrying pattern of increasing fire outbreaks in the Ashanti Region, which continue to devastate businesses.
“In February, a devastating fire swept through Suame Magazine, destroying about 25 spare parts shops and 34 vehicles,” the caucus noted. “The Kwadaso Wood Market has been hit twice within a month, while in March, a raging fire at the Konongo Mining Stores wiped out numerous businesses.”
With the most recent fire occurring on March 21, 2025, at Adum—one of Kumasi’s busiest commercial centers—the caucus lamented the challenges faced by the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) due to a lack of modern equipment, inadequate water supply, and insufficient personnel.
“We call on the Minister for the Interior to take immediate steps to investigate these recurring fires and implement comprehensive measures to prevent further occurrences,” the statement added.
As a major economic hub, the Ashanti Region cannot afford to suffer such disasters without decisive action. The caucus emphasized, “We demand urgent action to protect lives, livelihoods, and investments in the region.”
Assuring affected victims of their unwavering support, the caucus reaffirmed its push for swift government intervention to address the persistent fire outbreaks.
