Ashanti Region bans motorbikes, halts football over security fears

In response to the fatal shooting of Chief of Kusaase, Alhaji Abdul-Malik Azenbge, at Asewase on July 22, 2025, the Ashanti Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has announced a series of emergency measures to restore calm.
“No motorbikes shall be permitted on the roads after 7:00pm until further notice,” the Council stated in a release signed by Regional Minister Dr. Frank Amoakohene. He also confirmed that all unlicensed motorbikes or those without lights are now banned, citing the urgent need to tighten public safety.
REGSEC further announced the suspension of the ongoing inter-tribal football competition, adding that “no motorbike rider is permitted to wear a smock until further notice, as it has become an avenue for suspects to conceal weapons.”
The Council assured the public of heightened police and military presence in hotspots and urged cooperation in identifying the perpetrators. “We remain ready and committed to serving the public,” Dr. Amoakohene added.
