Asiama will rebuild trust in BoG – Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has expressed confidence in Dr. Johnson Asiama’s leadership as the Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG).
The President’s endorsement of Asiama as BoG Governor comes at a time the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has raised concerns about the legality of the Governor’s appointment.
At the swearing-in ceremony of the Governor and the First Deputy Governor Dr. Zakari Mumuni, President Mahama justified Dr. Asiama’s appointment stressing on his past achievements while he served as the Deputy Bank of Ghana.
“Ghana’s financial sector is in crisis and the task ahead demands experience foresight and decisive leadership. With Dr Asiama heading the Bank of Ghana, I am confident that we will rebuild trust in the institution, we will restore stability, and put our economy back on the path of sustained growth.
“I trust him with this responsibility knowing that he will serve with greater diligence and excellence,” he stated.
The Minority in Parliament has consistently criticised Dr. Asiama’s appointment, citing his previous involvement in the collapse of UniBank and UT Bank, for which he was facing trial before government withdrew the charges against him.
The NPP argued that Dr. Asiama’s legal case makes him unfit for the role of BoG Governor, a position that demands impeccable integrity and trustworthiness.
But President Mahama believes Dr. Asiama is a perfect fit for the role given his experiences and role previous held at the BoG.
“As Deputy Governor, he was instrumental in controlling inflation, stabilizing the currency, and strengthening regulatory oversight. His deep expertise in banking supervision, risk management, and digital finance positions him as the right leader at this critical time.”
The President noted that the appointment of Dr. Asiama and Dr. Zakaria Mumuni “is a deliberate affirmation of our unshakeable commitment to professionalism, integrity and proven competence as a sole criterion to our high office.”
