Asiedu Nketia calls for the separation of the attorney general’s office from the justice ministry

Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Asiedu Nketia, is advocating for the country to separate the Attorney General’s Office from the Ministry of Justice.

He says the country needs an attorney general who should not be political to be able to prosecute government officials when the need arises.

To the man known popularly as General Mosquito, until the office of the attorney general is separated from the Justice Ministry, the fight against corruption will be difficult.

To him, such a position should not be political to allow for the attorney general to undertake his/her prosecutorial duties without any form of favor.

“We need an attorney general who, in my view, ought not to be a politician. He must be a career attorney general who will not rely on any political party to put him there. I think that moving forward we should look at making the attorney general a career just like a judge so that he/she will be free to undertake prosecutorial duties,” he said.

Asiedu Nketia was speaking at the African Governance and Anti-Corruption Summit held at the University of Ghana on June 25, 2025.

The event was under the theme: Breaking the chains of corruption: empowering the next generation for a brighter tomorrow through good governance.
