Assembly members will receive monthly allowances, GHC 100 million allocated – Finance Minister

Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has announced a GH¢100 million allocation to provide monthly allowances for Assembly Members across the country.

Presenting the 2025 Budget Statement to Parliament on Tuesday, March 11, Dr. Forson emphasized the government’s recognition of the critical role Assembly Members play in grassroots governance and development.

“Mr. Speaker, an amount of GH¢100 million has been allocated for the payment of monthly allowance to all Assembly Members,” he stated.

For years, Assembly Members have lamented the lack of financial support, despite their significant contributions to local governance, conflict resolution, and community development.

Many have had to rely on personal resources to fulfill their responsibilities, a challenge that has often discouraged effective service delivery at the district level.

The allocation is part of a broader effort by the Mahama administration to strengthen governance structures, create jobs, and revamp the economy.

Other key financial commitments announced include GH¢51.3 million as seed funding for the Women’s Development Bank, GH¢300 million for the National Apprenticeship Programme, GH¢100 million for the ‘Adwumawura’ Programme, and GH¢100 million for the National Coders Programme.

In addition to these investments, the Finance Minister disclosed that resources have been earmarked for tackling pressing national challenges, such as disaster relief for communities affected by tidal waves in Ketu South.

These measures highlight the government’s drive to empower local representatives, equip young people with skills, and boost economic productivity.

With these allocations, Assembly Members are expected to be better resourced to serve their communities effectively, ensuring that grassroots governance translates into real development for the people they represent.
