Parliament approves GHC 65.9 million for Sports Ministry

Parliament has approved a budget of GH₵65,899,456 for the Ministry of Sports and Recreation for the 2025 fiscal year.
While this allocation is expected to support various activities under the Ministry, concerns have emerged over the absence of dedicated funding for maintaining the country’s sports infrastructure.
The Ministry has announced plans to renovate the Accra Sports Stadium after Ghana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Chad. However, some lawmakers believe that a long-term approach is needed to ensure continuous maintenance of the nation’s sporting facilities.
Several members of Parliament have emphasized the need for a structured funding mechanism that prioritizes infrastructure upkeep.
They argue that the current approach, which relies on periodic interventions, does not guarantee sustainability.
Suggestions have been made for a more consistent allocation of resources to prevent facilities from falling into disrepair.
Despite the approval of the budget, discussions surrounding infrastructure maintenance continue to raise questions about the government’s commitment to the long-term development of sports in Ghana.
