August 4 not a public holiday – Interior Ministry clarifies

The Ministry of the Interior has clarified that Monday, August 4, 2025, will be a regular working day, urging the public and institutions to take note and plan accordingly.

This clarification comes in light of recent legislative changes regarding Ghana’s national commemorative calendar. In June 2025, Parliament passed a bill reinstating September 21—Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s birthday—as Founders’ Day, a statutory public holiday celebrating Ghana’s independence struggle.

Previously, August 4 had been observed as Founder’s Day to mark the formation of the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC), a significant moment in the nation’s independence journey. However, under the revised law, August 4 now falls under the category of commemorative days.

In a statement dated July 31, the Ministry emphasized that commemorative days do not qualify as public holidays and thus do not necessitate a break from work or public activity.

The announcement puts to rest speculation and confirms that August 4, 2025, will not be observed as a statutory holiday.
