Former Defence Minister Dominic Nitiwul has described the August 6 helicopter crash that claimed eight lives as an unprecedented loss for Ghana, urging citizens to unite in grief and prayer.
Speaking at the Evening of Reflections and Memorial on August 9 at the State House, he said the tragedy, which took the lives of Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Environment Minister Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, and six others, was a “big loss to all of us.”
The victims, including senior military officers, were en route to Obuasi for the launch of an anti-illegal mining initiative.
“It could have been me,” Nitiwul said, reflecting on his eight years in office. “We cannot ask why—only pray for their souls.” He asked Ghanaians to take a moment to pray for the deceased, noting that such prayers would “feed into their souls and ask God to forgive all their sins.”
He highlighted the rare unity the tragedy had brought, with NDC and NPP members mourning side by side. “It is about Ghana today,” he stressed, adding that the loss of leaders in their prime should be a “clarion call” for togetherness.
