Ayawaso West wanted change — John Dumelo reflects on historic win and the task ahead

John Dumelo says he is still processing the “good shock” of his 2024 victory in the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency, a result he admits exceeded even his own expectations.
After contesting unsuccessfully in 2020, the now Member of Parliament and Deputy Minister for Agriculture described his decisive win as evidence that residents had long been ready for change.
“I was imagining a gap of two or three thousand votes,” he recalled in an interview on Joy News monitored by MyNewsGh.
“So when the numbers rose from two to four, then ten thousand and finally thirteen thousand, I was in shock. It showed people truly wanted change in Ayawaso West Wuogon.”
Dumelo also described Ayawaso West as “a beautiful cocktail of democracy,” home to both elite communities and informal settlements.
“Some will say it’s the richest, some will say it’s the most elitist, but behind the mansions are kiosks, and behind the glitz are communities with real needs,” he noted.
Now, as MP, he intends to use his platform to bridge that divide, serving both the East Legon resident who demands a working traffic light and the kiosk dweller who simply needs clean water and a toilet.
