Azorka arrested over assault on NPP vice chairman

National Vice Chairman of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Alhaji Sofo Azorka has reportedly been arrested.

The Eastern South Regional Police Command confirmed this new development.

Azorka was nabbed over his alleged involvement in the assault of Alhaji Masawudu Osman, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) third National Vice Chairman, during the Akwatia by-election on September 2, 2025.

Police said Azorka was picked up in Tamale on Wednesday, September 10, as part of ongoing investigations.

He was later granted bail after giving a caution statement, but instructed to report to the Eastern South Regional Police Command in Kyebi on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, at 10 a.m., where he is expected to be formally arraigned.

The arrest comes days after the NPP strongly condemned what it described as “threats of death and physical assault” by officials of the NDC.

In a statement signed by its General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, the ruling party accused Azorka and Alhaji Abdul Wahab Amadu of issuing death threats against the Minority Leader, Osei Alexander Afenyo-Markin, National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye, and Hon. Frank Annor Dompreh.

The NPP also alleged that Azorka led an “unprovoked physical attack” on Osman during the by-election, describing his conduct as “reckless” and “violent.”

The party warned that such actions by senior members of the NDC undermine democratic progress and fuel insecurity in the country.
