Bagbin refers Afenyo-Markin to Privileges Committee for contempt

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has referred Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin to the Privileges Committee for contempt, following what he described as the MP’s continued disregard for a formal decision of the House.

Bagbin delivered the ruling in Parliament on Wednesday, November 27, stating that Afenyo-Markin’s actions amounted to undermining the authority of the institution after he allegedly refused to step down from Ghana’s delegation to the ECOWAS Parliament despite being officially removed.

The case centres on the directive instructing the Minority Leader to cease participation in the regional body’s activities.

His alleged refusal triggered what the Speaker described as a clear act of contempt, an offence outlined under Article 117 of the 1992 Constitution and Parliament’s Standing Orders.

With the matter now before the Privileges Committee, chaired by Bernard Ahiafor, the Minority Leader will be required to respond to the allegations.

The committee will examine the facts, take evidence from all sides and submit its findings and recommendations to the full House.
