Bail now feels like a charge – Kwadwo Poku laments

Energy analyst and former New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer aspirant, Kwadwo Poku, has raised concerns about what he describes as a troubling trend in Ghana’s justice system, where arrests are being glorified over proper investigations and prosecutions.
Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile, Poku argued that the emphasis should be on building strong cases through thorough investigations rather than parading suspects as trophies of law enforcement.
“We’re beginning to pride ourselves on the arrest than the investigation and prosecution,” he said, stressing that the process should uphold fairness and justice.
He further noted that individuals under investigation are often subjected to stringent bail conditions that create the impression they have already been charged with an offense.
“If I have done something wrong and you call me in for an inquiry, let it be an inquiry. What we have seen, and it’s become a trend, is that bail conditions are now becoming as if the person is charged,” Poku stated.
