Barker-Vormawor jabs calls for reinstatement of suspended Chief Justice

Activist and lawyer Oliver Barker-Vormawor has weighed in on renewed debates surrounding the suspension of Ghana’s Chief Justice, Justice Gertrude A.E.S. Torkornoo, following recent international commentary on the matter.

In a post shared on social media, Barker-Vormawor wrote:

“The Ghana Bar Association wrote to the UK Bar Council and Commonwealth Lawyers asking them to issue a statement. The statement has been issued. Case closed.

But forget about that for a second. Araba has filed 10,000 frivolous cases. She has lost all.

Reinstate her so that she will use the Courts to now litigate her personal grievances? Hasn’t that ship sailed by now cos of her conduct?

When Araba is finally cleared, I swear she can even use the Judiciary to declare Bawumia winner of the 2024 elections.

Advise me.”

His comments follow a joint statement by the Bar Council of England and Wales and the Commonwealth Lawyers Association expressing “serious concern” over the April 22, 2025, suspension of Justice Torkornoo.

The statement stressed that “the existence of an independent and impartial judiciary is one of the cardinal features and bedrock of any country governed by the rule of law” and cautioned that “any measure or action taken by the Executive which is capable of being seen as impacting an independent judiciary is a matter of serious concern.”

Justice Torkornoo’s suspension has sparked months of political and legal debate in Ghana, with supporters citing due process concerns and critics pointing to questions about her conduct.
