Bawku conflict: We’re re-tooling the military for peace

The Minister for Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, says the Mahama-led government is taking bold steps to retool the Ghana Armed Forces, promising an era of peace and security for all Ghanaians.
“We’re taking additional significant steps to re-tool the Ghana Armed Forces, ensuring internal peace and security everywhere and safeguarding our territories.
“The Mahama Government is committed to #ResetGhana, and we’re working tirelessly to make it happen. Lasting peace shall surely return to Bawku and all affected areas,” he wrote on his official Facebook page.
Meanwhile, President John Dramani Mahama has issued a strong warning to those fanning the flames of violence in Bawku, saying their actions only sabotage efforts at finding lasting peace.
“The current fighting and killings can only be done by people who want to derail the mediation efforts,” he cautioned. “And so let’s give peace a chance.”
In what appears to be a new, firmer approach, the President announced that the military has now shifted its posture from peacekeeping to peace enforcement.
“That means they are going to be a bit more robust with anybody who is involved in criminality,” he warned.
His message wasn’t limited to Bawku. Mahama extended his appeal to other flashpoint areas like Nkwanta, urging residents to choose unity over division.
“The values of unity, patriotism, and compassion are more urgent than ever. We must resist the forces of division and exclusion that undermine our shared heritage.”
