Bawumia is not the cause of our worst defeat

Former presidential staffer Dennis Miracles Aboagye has hit back at claims that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is responsible for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) so-called “worst electoral defeat,” defending the Vice President’s candidacy for the 2028 general elections.

He made the remarks during a media interview at the sidelines of Bawumia’s meeting with former Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) monitored by MyNewsGh.

Reacting to criticisms that Bawumia, who led the NPP in the 2024 elections, should not be given another shot due to the party’s loss, Aboagye dismissed the narrative as false and misleading.

“First of all, it’s false if anybody says it’s the most unprecedented loss in the history of the party,” he stated.

“I think 41.7 percent is higher than 39 percent, and we’ve lost elections with 39 percent before. But let’s put that aside. The irrelevance of that claim is quite high and is not supported by any data.”

He further explained that Ghana’s electoral history favours candidates with existing support bases over those starting from scratch, making Bawumia a stronger choice moving forward.

“If you look at the electoral history of this country, it clearly tells you that you are better off going into your next elections with a candidate that has a baseline vote in his basket than to go with one that is zero,” Aboagye explained.

Citing historical precedence, he pointed to President John Agyekum Kufuor’s comeback.

“President Kufuor came back from 39 percent to win the next elections. And since former President Rawlings left the scene, every candidate who’s succeeded came into the race with a certain number of votes,” he noted.

Aboagye’s comments come as the NPP navigates post-election reflections and prepares for 2028, with Bawumia still enjoying significant support despite the party’s recent electoral loss.
