What Is PvE in WoW?

PvE (Player vs. Environment) refers to all the activities in the game where you battle computer-controlled enemies instead of other players. PvE content can be casual or highly competitive, depending on how deep you want to dive into it. Some activities are designed for solo play, meaning you can tackle them alone and at your own pace, while others require a group, so you’ll need to team up with other players to do them.

Questing 

Every WoW player starts their adventure by questing. Quests are missions given by NPCs (non-player characters). Completing such a mission can earn you XP and various items like resources, consumables, gear, etc. 

WoW’s quest system is designed to gradually introduce you to different regions and storylines, as well as get you familiar with your character’s class abilities, combat systems, and core game mechanics. Here are the main types of quests you’ll encounter:

• Story Quests: These quests guide you through the expansion’s storyline and often lead to major game events.
• Side Quests: Smaller, optional missions that help you delve deeper into the game’s lore and sometimes offer unique rewards like pets, toys, or cosmetic items.
• Weekly and Daily Quests: Repeatable tasks that refresh regularly and offer steady rewards.
• World Quests: Unlocked at max level, these tasks appear across different zones, offering daily or weekly challenges with rewards such as gear, gold, and resources.

To keep track of your quests, your Quest Log shows all the tasks you’ve accepted with the info on where to go, what to do, and what rewards you’ll receive upon completion.

Dungeons

Once you hit level 10, you can start running dungeons—small-scale, instanced challenges where five players work together to defeat enemies and earn rewards. Dungeons typically have a mix of trash mobs (weaker enemies) and bosses, each with unique mechanics that require teamwork to defeat.

There are different difficulty levels for dungeons:

• Normal: The easiest version, great for learning mechanics.
• Heroic: Available at max level. Harder versions of Normal dungeons with better rewards.
• Mythic: Even tougher versions with more powerful enemies and higher-quality gear.

WoW also offers the Mythic+ (M+) format, which is a timed, infinitely scaling dungeon system that gets harder as you progress. To enter a Mythic+ dungeon, you’ll need a Mythic Keystone of a particular level. You get your first Keystone by completing a regular Mythic dungeon (also called M0). Then, every time you complete an M+ instance, you’ll receive a new Keystone for a higher level dungeon. At certain levels, special modifiers (affixes) are added, changing enemy behavior and forcing players to adapt their strategies. The higher the Mythic+ level, the tougher the enemies—and the better the rewards. Additionally, every M+ run earns you rating points, adding up to your Mythic+ score, which unlocks various achievements, titles, and rewards.

There are two main ways to get into a dungeon group. Teaming up with friends and guildmates is often the best way to coordinate and succeed, especially in harder dungeons. If that’s not an option, you can use Dungeon Finder to group up with random players. You can access it through Group Finder in the Dungeons & Raids menu. There, you can select your role (Tank, DPS, or Healer), choose a specific dungeon or go for a random one, and see what rewards you’ll get for completing the run. There are no automatic queues for Mythic and Mythic+ instances, so you’ll need to find teammates via Premade Groups by joining in or creating your own group.

Raids

Raids are massive, multi-boss PvE encounters designed for up to 40 players. Just like with dungeons, there are different raid tiers in WoW:

• LFR (Looking for Raid): The easiest raid difficulty, accessible via matchmaking. It’s a great way to experience the raid for the first time and learn boss mechanics.
• Normal: A step up from LFR, still fairly accessible, but requires an organized group.
• Heroic: Harder than Normal, demanding better teamwork and execution.
• Mythic: The hardest difficulty, requiring top-tier coordination, strategy, and skill.

Raiding is one of the most rewarding activities in WoW, offering powerful loot, exclusive mounts, titles, achievements, and sometimes even unique cosmetic items. With each increasing difficulty, the quality of rewards improves, meaning the best gear in the game comes from Mythic raids. 

Group Finder can also help you get into raiding, but automatic matchmaking is available only for LFR. If you want to try higher tiers, you’ll need to search for teammates via the Premade Group feature. You can either join an existing raid group or create your own party and invite others. However, keep in mind that finding a raid group can be tough, especially if you’re a beginner. Many raid leaders have strict requirements and only take players with experience, good gear, and high performance. If you’re just starting out, getting into a raid guild is your best bet. Guilds teach new players, help them improve, and provide a friendly, structured raiding environment. Plus, raiding with a guild is just more fun!

Delves

Delves are a new type of PvE content in The War Within, designed for solo players or groups of up to 4 people. In these small, instanced adventures, you’ll fight enemies and complete objectives to earn gear rewards. Whether you go in alone or with friends, you’ll always have an NPC companion by your side. This companion can take on different combat roles, use unique abilities, and even level up to become stronger over time.

The difficulty of Delves scales through a tier system, with a total of eleven tiers. Until you reach level 80, only the first three will be available. There are also special weekly Bountiful Delves, which provide better loot and currency rewards. To access these bonuses, you’ll need to open Bountiful Coffers using special Restored Coffer Keys.

Open-World PvE

Even outside of instances, WoW’s open world is packed with PvE content.

You can roam the world, fight mobs, and collect gold, resources, and gear that can be sold or used to power up your character. If you’re looking for a bigger challenge—and better rewards—you might want to target more serious opponents:

• Rares and Rare Elites are powerful enemies that drop more valuable loot. If you get lucky, you might even find a high-value item to sell at the Auction House for a ton of gold.
• World Bosses are massive enemies that spawn once per week in different zones. They drop high-level gear and other useful items, but you’ll need a large group to take them down. Fortunately, World Bosses are open-tag, meaning you don’t need to be in a party—just attack them, and you’ll get loot if they die!

World Events

World Events are weekly PvE activities taking place in various in-game zones. Some events are always available during an expansion, while others are seasonal and usually tied to real-world holidays.

Regular World Events offer a set of objectives, like defeating enemies or collecting certain items, and rewards that you can claim upon completion. Some events only unlock when you reach max level or gain enough reputation with a certain faction. 

Holiday Events are limited-time activities that celebrate real-world traditions or other special occasions. For example, there’s Hallow’s End for Halloween, Winter Veil for Christmas, Love is in the Air for St. Valentine’s Day, and last year, there was a special Anniversary Event to mark the 20th anniversary of the game. Holiday Events typically introduce new quests, dungeons, and mini-games, giving players the chance to earn unique, themed rewards like mounts, pets, toys, transmog items, and more.
