Bawumia visits injured KNUST student, donates GH¢50,000 for treatment

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia on Tuesday visited Herbert, a Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) student who is recovering at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) after being stabbed multiple times during a violent altercation at a New Patriotic Party (NPP) “Thank You” tour event in Kumasi.
Dr. Bawumia expressed sympathy to the student and his family, wishing him a speedy recovery. During the visit, the Vice President also donated GH¢50,000 to support Herbert’s medical expenses.
The incident, which occurred at the Pentecost Church in Bantama, unfolded during a gathering organized by the camp of former Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong, as part of his ongoing appreciation tour following the NPP presidential primaries.
According to eyewitness accounts, the victim, a member of a Jama group from Unity Hall (Conti) at KNUST, had been contracted to perform at the event.
Tensions reportedly escalated after a wealthy associate of Agyapong offered money to the performers.
Shortly after, a group of heavily built, gun-wielding men—allegedly affiliated with the NPP—stormed the venue and forcibly took the money.
The situation quickly spiraled into violence. A confrontation between the Jama group and the assailants ensued, during which gunshots were fired, and Herbert was stabbed multiple times. He was immediately rushed to the emergency unit at KATH.
Dr. Bawumia’s visit is seen by some observers as an attempt to ease tensions and demonstrate leadership amidst growing concerns about violence at political events involving youth groups.
The Vice President’s donation was warmly received by Herbert’s family and hospital staff, who thanked him for his timely support.
