Bawumia’s case was strong, but Agyapong’s is now stronger – Former Minister

Former Western North Regional Minister, Joojo Rocky Obeng, has shared a significant shift in perspective within the New Patriotic Party (NPP), suggesting that momentum is now swinging toward Kennedy Ohene Agyapong as the preferred presidential candidate heading into the party’s next internal contest.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Face to Face on Tuesday, June 24, Obeng reflected on the changing mood within the party following the 2024 general elections.

“Election 2024 made a stronger case for Dr Alhaji Bawumia,” he acknowledged. “But post-election 2024, the party base and elections that are ahead of us, in my considered view, are making a much, much stronger case for Kennedy Ohene Agyapong.”

According to Obeng, while former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia was seen as the natural successor before the 2024 polls, Kennedy Agyapong’s rising influence among grassroots supporters is now impossible to ignore.

Agyapong, the former Assin Central MP, gained significant political traction during the last flagbearer race, where he placed second in the NPP’s internal contest. Since then, his no-nonsense style, populist rhetoric, and criticism of party leadership have kept him in the public eye — endearing him to many within the rank and file.

In a related development, the NPP has announced a joint meeting with all personalities who have declared intentions to contest in the party’s upcoming presidential primaries.

A statement signed by General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, dated June 24, 2025, confirmed the scheduled engagement with the Steering Committee and the National Council of Elders. The move is seen as part of efforts to maintain party unity and ensure a smooth transition toward the next electoral cycle.

The same statement also revealed that Bono Regional Chairman Kwame Baffoe (Abronye) has been referred to the National Disciplinary Committee over alleged misconduct.

Though details remain scarce, sources suggest the referral stems from recent public outbursts that may have breached party code of conduct.

As the NPP begins charting its course for the 2028 elections, the internal dynamics between key figures like Bawumia and Agyapong — and how the party leadership manages discipline and unity — are expected to shape its future more than ever.
