Black Stars fall to Nigeria in Unity Cup showdown

Ghana’s Black Stars were dealt a narrow blow in their much-anticipated Unity Cup semi-final encounter with Nigeria, falling 2-1 in what was a spirited but ultimately heartbreaking display on Wednesday, May 28, at the GTech Community Stadium in London.
The match, another chapter in the fierce Ghana-Nigeria rivalry often dubbed the “Jollof Derby,” lived up to its billing.
Nigeria got the early momentum, with Cyriel Dessers capitalising on a defensive lapse to put the Super Eagles ahead just 14 minutes into the game. Minutes later, misfortune struck Ghana again as a Razak Simpson own goal handed Nigeria a comfortable cushion.
Despite being two goals down, the youthful Black Stars side, missing the likes of Mohammed Kudus and Thomas Partey, showed grit.
The second half saw debutant Brandon Thomas-Asante grab his moment, pulling one back for Ghana with a fine finish that gave fans something to cheer about. But it proved too little, too late.
Coach Otto Addo’s decision to field a relatively inexperienced side was bold — and while the result may sting, there were glimpses of the future. Ghana’s resilience in the second half was commendable, showing character even in defeat.
Nigeria, meanwhile, marches on to the final of the 2025 Unity Cup, where they are set to clash with Jamaica — a side that has captured attention with its flair and determination.
