Black Stars technical advisor arrives in Ghana ahead of World Cup qualifiers

Newly appointed Black Stars technical advisor, Alfred Schafer, has arrived in Ghana ahead of the Black Stars’ 2026 World Cup qualifying games in March.

As part of a technical restructuring, which saw Ghana part ways with assistant coach Joseph Laumann in January, 75-year-old Alfred Schafer was appointed technical advisor of the Black Stars.

Schafer was appointed alongside Desmond Ofei (assistant coach), Kris Perquy (psychologist), and Gregory De Grauwe (video analyst).

Schafer’s role was previously held by former Ghana manager Chris Hughton, who was elevated to the head coach position after 12 months.

The German is expected to bring on board a wealth of expertise, spanning four decades in management.

The former Cameroon boss was met by Black Stars assistant coach Desmond Ofei upon his arrival in Accra.

Schafer, who led Cameroon to glory in the 2002 Africa Cup of Nations, has arrived in Ghana to begin preparations for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

The Black Stars are without a win since defeating the Central African Republic in their second World Cup qualifying game in June 2024.

Ghana’s underwhelming year, meanwhile, ended on a sour note as the team failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations for the first time in more than two decades.

The Black Stars, however, are well positioned to qualify for a fifth World Cup, with the team currently second in their qualifying group and set to take on Chad and Madagascar in March.
