Boako misled parliament on debt stock – Nyarko Ampem

Deputy Minister for Finance, Thomas Nyarko Ampem, has taken issue with what he describes as misleading figures presented by Dr. Gideon Boako, economic advisor to former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, during the debate on the 2025 Mid-Year Budget Review.
Speaking during the concluding phase of the debate in Parliament, Mr. Nyarko Ampem accused Dr. Boako of quoting the wrong debt figure in an attempt to undermine the government’s reported economic progress.
“Mr. Speaker, Hon. Gideon Boako, an advisor to the former Vice President, provided some wrong debt figures in his submission to suggest that the negative 15.6% debt accumulation is not novel,” he pointed out.
He clarified that the official records from the Bank of Ghana directly contradict Dr. Boako’s claims.
“Mr. Speaker, for the record, the Bank of Ghana’s Summary of Economic and Financial Data published in May 2023 shows that the debt stock as of November 2022 was GH₵575.7 billion, and not the GH₵382.7 billion quoted by the Honourable Member,” he asserted.
Mr. Nyarko Ampem insisted that the government’s recent fiscal performance, including the reduction in the rate of debt accumulation, should not be dismissed based on inaccuracies.
