Brace yourself for hike in prices of food and utilities—NPP’s Chairman Coka to Ghanaians

A leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Odeneho Kwaku Appiah, has hinted at a rise in utility and food.

According to him, as the government has scrapped betting tax and other taxes, the price of utilities will have to go up to make up the losses that will be made as a result of the taxes being scrapped.

In a Facebook post, Chairman Coka, as he is affectionately called, reminded Ghanaians of the hardship that awaits them.

He said “There is a film titled ‘I Told You So’. Yes, the betting tax and E-levy have been abolished by President Mahama’s government, but gas, water, and electricity will go up. Food prices and other items are likely to increase too. Time will tell”.

Finance Minister, Cassiel Ato Forson while presenting the 2025 budget indicated that government has decided to fulfil its promise of scrapping betting tax, e-levy, among other nuisance taxes.

He explained that after the scrapping, the government intends to ensure fiscal discipline to ensure that revenue generated in the country is used for prudent purposes and not wasted.
