Break the 8 was impossible, but we tried—Abdul-Hamid reflects without regret

Leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and former CEO of the National Petroleum Authority, Dr. Mustapha Abdul-Hamid, has delivered a no-holds-barred take on the party’s loss in the 2024 general elections, declaring that he has no regrets and remains proud of the NPP’s record.

Speaking during the party’s ongoing Thank You Tour, Dr. Abdul-Hamid addressed party supporters with passion and honesty, reflecting on the party’s much-touted ‘Break the 8’ agenda — the goal of winning a third consecutive term in office.

“Tell yourself the truth, why were you saying ‘Break the 8’? Because you knew it has never happened before. You were trying to do the impossible,” he said bluntly.

But despite the electoral outcome, he maintained that he bears no bitterness or blame. “Walaahi, I am not beating myself, I understand it. I am not upset, and I don’t think anybody is responsible for anything,” he added.

In a spirited tone, Dr. Abdul-Hamid assured the crowd that the NPP is far from defeated. “He who fights and runs away, lives to fight another day. In our case, we didn’t fight and run away, we fought, and we are here, and we are fighting again.”

Known for his directness, he didn’t shy away from drawing a line between himself and some of his party colleagues.

“The general secretary and others are nice guys, but I am not a very nice guy. They might say they are sorry, but walaahi, I am not sorry about anything.”

Highlighting the party’s achievements in government, he boldly asserted that former President John Mahama, now back in office, would not be able to match the NPP’s performance.

“We did our best for this country, and there is nothing that John Mahama will do that will match up to what we have done. Nothing, walaahi, nothing,” he declared.

Criticising the early signs of instability under the current administration, he said, “Look, already see what is going on in governance.

“They appoint a chief executive one day, replace them the next.”
