CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe to meet President Mahama as GFA boss eyes new role

CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe has arrived in Ghana for an important visit, and is set to meet Ghana’s President, His Excellency John Mahama, at Jubilee House in Accra.

After this meeting, Dr Motsepe will join CAF’s Vice-Presidents and take part in an Executive Committee meeting later the same day.

His visit underlines the close connection between African football leadership and government support, showing how football helps unite people, drive development, and empower young people across the continent.

During his trip, Dr Motsepe will also meet young journalists at the Young Reporters Workshop, held alongside the CAF African Schools Football Championship, Ghana 2025.

Meanwhile, Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku is expected to be named one of CAF’s new Vice-Presidents.

This comes after several top CAF officials left their roles following a tense FIFA Council election. Dr Motsepe’s plan to appoint new Vice-Presidents aims to restore balance and unity within CAF’s leadership.

Okraku’s promotion would be a big win for Ghana and Anglophone Africa, especially after Nigeria lost its seat on FIFA’s Council. Other expected new Vice-Presidents include officials from Liberia, Togo, Tanzania, Mauritius, Malawi, Cameroon, Gabon, and DR Congo.

This reshuffle is seen as a way to balance power across different regions and languages within CAF, easing frustrations after recent elections favoured North African countries.

For Ghana, Okraku’s rise shows the country’s growing strength in African football. However, keeping the peace within CAF and managing new political challenges will be a real test for the new leadership team.
