Calls for probe into School Feeding Programme under Akufo-Addo intensify

Legal practitioner Austin Kwabena Brako-Powers has urged President John Dramani Mahama to launch a full-scale investigation into the operations of the School Feeding Programme under former President Nana Akufo-Addo’s administration.

Speaking on 3News’ KeyPoints, he alleged that the programme was riddled with corruption and mismanagement and warranted urgent scrutiny.

“President Mahama has to investigate the operations of the School Feeding Programme under Akufo-Addo and prosecute anyone found to have engaged in or benefited from any underhand dealings there,” Brako-Powers stated emphatically.

The School Feeding Programme, initially introduced to provide nutritious meals for schoolchildren and improve enrollment, has been plagued by numerous reports of irregularities.

Under Akufo-Addo’s government, several suppliers and caterers accused officials of diverting funds, inflating contracts, and engaging in favouritism.

Brako-Powers believes these allegations cannot be swept under the rug, especially given Ghana’s economic challenges.

His comments come after the former Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, Adwoa Safo made shocking revelations about alleged corruption within Ghana’s School Feeding Programme, calling for urgent government intervention.

“The rot and corruption in the school feeding sector is serious. This government should pay attention to it.

“Former President John Agyekum Kufuor had a great vision for the programme, but the way it has been twisted is a serious matter,” she stated in an interview on Wontumi TV.

Recounting her experience as Gender Minister, she claimed that President Akufo-Addo initially instructed her to audit the programme before funds would be released.

However, she faced resistance from key officials, particularly one individual who ignored her calls and later claimed to have powerful government connections.

According to her, the majority of the corruption was traced to the Central Region, but when she submitted her audit report, the president allegedly denied asking for it and ordered her to set it aside.
