Calls mount on EOCO to brief the country on Yamin and Abanga’s involvement in galamsey

There are calls on the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) to brief the country on their investigation into the National Organizer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and Yakubu Abanga, the National Vice Chairman of the NDC.
It will be remembered that the Attorney General, in July, wrote to EOCO to investigate Yamin and Abanga for their alleged involvement in illegal mining.
The Attorney General’s letter read in parts
As Your Office is aware, H.E. the President has consistently reiterated his government’s firm commitment to eradicating illegal mining and restoring sanity to the natural resource governance regime in Ghana.
In line with this national stance, and pursuant to your mandate under the EOCO Act, 2010 (Act 804), I am directing your Office to invite the following persons named in recent credible reports for interrogation namely, Mr. Yakubu Abanga and Mr. Joseph Yamin.
Additionally, you are to investigate any other persons found to be complicit in these unlawful mining activities. The scope of this investigation should also cover issues raised in Professor Frimpong-Boateng’s report on illegal mining.
The two leading members of the NDC issued statements denying their involvement in illegal mining.
A strong defence was mounted by the Deputy General Secretary for the NDC, Mustapha Gbande, for Yamin, where he claimed some senior persons in the NDC are behind the calls for Yamin to be investigated.
However, two months after the Attorney General wrote to EOCO to investigate the national officers of the governing political party, EOCO has not provided any form of update on the matter.
There are concerns from the general public that the government, since taking over power, hasn’t shown any form of commitment to fighting the menace, which they took advantage of to come to power.
There are calls on EOCO to brief the country on the state of the investigation involving Yamin and Abanga as John Dramani Mahama promised an accountable governance.
