Calm returns after Hamile border clashes

Calm has returned to Hamile in the Upper West Region after violent clashes between residents and immigration officers at the border post on Saturday evening.
The unrest erupted when angry youth accused officers of misconduct and of allowing gunmen from Burkina Faso to cross into Ghana illegally.
Matters escalated after the officers allegedly tried to repatriate a Burkinabe woman said to be seeking refuge, prompting the youth to storm the border post, destroy property, and set a vehicle ablaze.
In a statement, the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS), through its Head of Public Affairs, Michael Amoako Attah, appealed for restraint and assured residents that the matter is under investigation.
The GIS pledged that appropriate measures will follow once inquiries are complete. Security forces have since restored order, and calm prevailed in the area on Monday morning.
