Mayor of Cape Coast, George Justice Arthur, has described the recent directive by the Ministry of Local Government to pay monthly allowances to Assembly Members as a timely and commendable intervention.
Speaking in an interview with Amansan Krakye, the Chief Executive of the Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly acknowledged the financial strain that often comes with the role, drawing from his own experience as a former Assembly Member.
He pointed out that a significant number of Assembly Members within the Cape Coast Metropolis are currently unemployed, and the introduction of the allowance would greatly ease their financial burdens.
“Our President, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, has once again fulfilled another campaign promise—to pay monthly allowances to Assembly Members,” he stated.
“In our communities, when anything goes wrong, the first person people turn to is the Assembly Member, and this comes with a lot of financial constraints and challenges.”
Mayor Arthur emphasized that the monthly allowance will not only serve as a form of motivation but also provide much-needed financial relief for Assembly Members who have long shouldered community responsibilities without consistent support.
“I know for a fact that if you come to the Cape Coast Metro, most of our Assembly Members are unemployed, so this will be very uplifting to their finances,” he added.
